Alameda County Fair

July 12th, 2009
:Bowling for Soup, less the drummer.

On our Work is Overrated Summer Tour 2007 we listened to Bowling For Soup CDs as we traversed the countryside. The songs always conjure up memories for me of that summer. I remember driving through Yosemite listening to Love Sick Stomach Ache and Smoothie King. I love the lyrics to Smoothie King because Thom sometimes sings them out loud, especially the, “You’re crazy and I’m crazy about you…” part, typically when I’m contemplating some crazy athletic event – double century, Half Ironman… I have three BFS albums loaded into my Thumps, the sunglasses I wear when I’m riding or running. I listen to BFS A LOT!

For some reason BFS plays a lot of county fairs. We got to see them in 2007 at the Stanislaus County Fair. We got lucky and they were playing at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton this year – much closer. If you just read the lyrics you would think these guys were sad and totally unhappy in love. Maybe they are… But what I hear are friends having a great time, making fun of themselves for some of the stupid things they have done. That really comes out in their shows too. They had a 6 PM and an 8PM show this year. They played mostly the same songs at both, but the clowning around between songs was quite different.

It was a fun way to spend a Friday evening.

Race Across America – 2009 Part II

July 1st, 2009

RAAM wasn’t all bad, really. We developed some great camaraderie with some of the riders and crew, especially in our van. We did get to see some interesting parts of the country and have some great experiences.

We drove through Monument Valley, one of the most iconic roads in the country. It was about midnight, so all we saw was strip of road in the tunnel of the headlights. I didn’t even realized that we had gone through it until a few hours later. (more…)

Race Across America – 2009 Part I

July 1st, 2009

We just finished crewing for a team in the Race Across America. RAAM is a non-stop bicycle race from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD.

We’ve debated for a couple of days how we would describe our RAAM experience.  At the end of the race we were unhappy with the net result . After a week of very little sleep and some growing personality conflicts, the race ended for us on a sour note.  We’ve thought about not posting this write up, but decided that we wanted to describe the race from our perspective, good and bad.
