Melbourne, Australia
In November of 2005 I was working for Lonely Planet. As part of a large project, I spent a month at the company’s global headquarters in Melbourne. I had a great time exploring the downtown area and taking in the local scenery. I never did make it out of the city. It wasn’t until I’d been there for a few weeks and went to the observation platform atop Rialto Tower, that I realized that while Melbourne’s city center is very compact, the city is surrounded by sprawling suburbs as far as the eye can see.
I never made it much out of the city center. Melbourne has seen a lot of new construction in the last decade or so and they’ve refused to build dull buildings. They’ve embraced odd shapes, wild colors and public art to make the city less drab. I’d say they have succeeded. Someday i hope to go back and have another chance to explore this interesting place. Until then, enjoy these photos.
